Health knowledge belongs to everyone.

The Literacy Clinic works to make health education more accessible in underserved communities, with a focus on single and immigrant parents.

Our mission & purpose

Through workshops, first-aid and menstrual care kits, local chapters, and community partnerships, we connect health education with everyday support.

Understanding health information can mean making sense of a label, preparing for an appointment, or finding information in a language you understand. Clear explanations and welcoming spaces make it easier to ask questions.

Our mission is to strengthen health knowledge in lower-income communities around the world and help close gaps in access to health education and everyday resources.

Our education topics include understanding medication labels, nutrition and budget-friendly cooking, mental health awareness, preventive care, and menstrual health, through virtual and in-person workshops.

Why health literacy matters

In its March 2024 fact sheet, the Center for Health Care Strategies reports that only about one in ten English-speaking U.S. adults has proficient health-literacy skills, citing the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy.

This is national research context, rather than a measure of The Literacy Clinic’s impact. Health information and services need to be easier to understand and use.
